Being in California, I was not able to meet the Bob Skelding traveling companions. Reading his blog has been a source of real joy since I found it a couple of weeks ago. Still in shock! I read somewhere in all this sad information and guest blogs, that DeeDee was a hero to Joyce. Couldn't find the story though. Anyone out there know it? They are all heros in my mind. Hope they get to see there buddy Bob soon. One day I hope to meet them.
They are all my heros!

Before Bob decided he was leaving we had talked about breeding his girls Joyce and DeeDee to my paint stallion. He was going to keep one and I was going to get the other baby......I miss seeing them at the farm. I drive by it everyday, several times a day.....

I met Bob the horses and clementine early Oct 2008 in Cicero New York, I hung out with him on the road for a few hours...met and pet the horses and have pics of the place where he stayed in Cicero with the horses not sure if I will be able to attach them here though I'm a computer dummy! well it looks like i can't "attach" anything can some one help me? I would love to show the pic off that I have...

When Bob passed through our area in November, my husband shot this video and posted it to youtube. It's not the highest quality - or very long, but you can clearly see all four beautiful horses in action. www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYsoefi1XkgReading the Horse talk link on his website just breaks my heart knowing that two of them were lost. I could write like that about our horses, so I know just how he feels about them. It's funny how you read human thoughts into their actions and their politics. You can sure see Bob's love for his animals, and how close he was to them, in everything he writes. We are thankful that he survived this terrible accident. Looking at the debris field at the accident scene, it's nothing short of a miracle that they were not all killed. Yet we are all heartbroken at the loss of DeeDee and Dolly. It makes me want to run out and hug my own sweet horses. |

Thank you bentoak for posting these beautiful pictues. I too took some pictures of them. I loved those horses when I met them. I am trying to figure out, facing the front of the horses which horse is the one on the right on front row that walked next to the center lane? That is the one I fell in love with. I told her I loved her and she just stood there looking me in the eyes like she understood every word I said. She looked so tired. I just wanted to take her home with me. I thought that was Dollie. Now I am confused. Can someone help me with this please?

I think the out front horse was Dollie. She had the smaller head (shorter face) and was sort of prettier. On Bob's website under the Horse Talk tab, he talks about her flirting with Doc and going on about being the pretty girl. Joyce and DeeDee were half sisters and had been together since they were babies, and they were the other team, with DeeDee on the outside.

Thank you, I thought that was Dollie. I still cry over her with those big brown eyes looking into mine. She was such a lover and so sweet. They all were. You could tell they loved Bob and he did them. He gleamed when he would talk about them. I think Dollie was the one he said would fall asleep while she walked.  I am sure he will have a ton of memories of them both. |

Yes that was Dolly. Dolly was in front with DeeDee behind her on the road side of the wagon. On the off-road side Doc is in front with Joyce behind. And yes, it was Dolly who would nap as she walked. Her eyes were some of the most expressive of any animal. My heart breaks!

I read that a Mississippi highway crew buried DeeDee and Dolly near where they were killed. I hope someone who lives near there will make and place two crosses with their names on them as near as possible to where they were killed as is often done for human accident victims. I think there should be a marker to remind people to drive more safely, and to remind people of what happened to these two fine horses

I had the pleasure of meeting Bob and his friends in Urbana Ohio. I remember Bob telling us that when Dolly would become tired she would lean over to Doc and kiss him so he would work harder so she could rest.

Thank you Dottie. Yes, it still makes me cry just seeing those pictures and seeing Dotti looking me in the eyes as I told her I loved her. It was like she wanted me to just nuzzle with and love her.
They were all so sweet but Dollie just really caught my heart the most.
I too hope they will put up markers for people to stop and pay respects. I am sure Bob would want to go back there and see the burial place when he gets out. I wondered what they did when they die because I had thought at one time they burned them instead of burying them.
